Hope you all enjoyed the holidays, spent lots of time with friends and family, and received lots of Antoinette Christmas baskets! And now it’s back to reality…
Brigitte and I have been holed up in the office doing paperwork for the past two weeks. Combine that with endless cold and rain, and you’ve got a recipe for the winter blues. Have you all been having the same problem? Fear not! I’ve got just the thing to pick you up – I just had a cup and I’m feeling all warm and happy! Now I know some of you Dutchies are going to wrinkle your noses at the suggestion of adding a marshmallow, but trust me – it’s the best part. 🙂
Spicy Hot Chocolate
1 liter milk
1 tiny pinch each: ground chili powder, nutmeg, clove, ginger, and cinnamon (optional)
112 gr semisweet chocolate
Marshmallows for garnish
In a large saucepan, combine milk and spices. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove the pan from the heat, add the chocolate, and stir until melted and thoroughly combined. Return the pan to the heat and bring to just below the boiling point. Remove the pan from the heat for a moment, then return it to the heat and bring it to almost a boil a third time. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk or beat with a mixer until frothy on top. Pour ¾ of the chocolate into four cups, then beat the remaining chocolate in the saucepan until a thick froth forms. Spoon the froth on top of the chocolate in the cups, pop a marshmallow on top, and serve.

This gorgeous frosted lemon birthday cake was made by 10 year-old Sarah Megan. She had the fabulous idea of making it into 3 layers instead of 2, and the decorations ROCK! Hope you had a great birthday and keep up the baking!
